Distinguished and Famous people from Mildura Rural City
💧 George and William Chaffey
George and William Chaffey brought North American irrigation experience to Mildura in the 1880s, encouraged by Alfred Deakin’s interest in making irrigated settlement work on the Murray. Their plans combined channels, farms and a town layout. The enterprise encountered serious financial difficulties, and the brothers’ later paths diverged: George returned to the United States while William remained in Mildura. Their influence outlasted the original company. The region’s irrigated landscape developed through later institutions and growers as well, making the brothers a formative chapter in a much longer and sometimes difficult water-management story.
🍽️ Stefano de Pieri
Stefano de Pieri settled in Mildura in 1991 after migrating from Italy and working in Melbourne. Local produce and wine prompted him to connect memories of the Veneto with life on the Murray. The resulting book, A Gondola on the Murray, became a television series, bringing the district’s food to a wider audience. His contribution also extended into arts activity and regional events. The restaurant was one expression of a broader interest in how food, culture and a regional economy fit together, with Mildura supplying both ingredients and an adopted home.
🏉 Dale Weightman
Dale Weightman came from Mildura Imperials to Richmond at the end of 1976. Although recruited as a centre half-forward, the small, elusive player became a celebrated rover, valued for his hands, movement and ability to create chances for teammates. His 274-game Richmond career included the 1980 premiership, two best-and-fairest awards and several seasons as captain. Representative honours added to that record. The Mildura connection lies in the local football pathway before recruitment, within the Sunraysia district that supplied a number of players to Richmond during the country-zoning era.
